Basic Eye Anatomy

Most problems affecting the eye area are in some way linked to the unique anatomy found only in this area of the body. Eyelid akin is transition skin between the dry facial skin, possessing a well-developed stratum corneum, and the moist conjunctival membrane covering the eyeball. Everyone eyelids frequently comes wet from tears which means this will enable compromised barrier function. The eyelid tissue forms a transition between the relatively immobile facial skin of the cheeks and the tremendously mobile eyeball. Human body eyelids covers an extensive interlocking array of muscles encircling the eye allowing movement and expression. There are approximately 22 facial muscles that control movement around the eyes with 14 muscles dedicated to opening and closing of the eyes. Skin thickness around the eyelids is the thinnest on the body, measuring approximately 0.5mm. The muscle, nerves, and blood supply around the eyelids covers a complex network of underlying structures. There’s numerous capillaries and venules that supply the area with blood containing oxygen and nutrients for muscle and movement repair. The extensive vascular supply is under a sensitive nerve control allowing quick changes in blood supply and return. This is demonstrated by the rapidity with which the eyes can swell following ingestion of allergic substance, such as as food or drug. The blood vessels and nerves are intertwined among muscles that are quick to respond with fine movements to voluntary and involuntary central commands .

Bone Fat around the eyeball: Beneath the skin the eyeball rests in bony cradle known as the orbit .

  • The bone above the eyeball is labeled as the superior orbital ridge
  • The bone benesth the eyeball is similarly is called the inferior orbital ridge
  • Both Orbitial ridge are designed to protect the eyeball from trauma .
  • Orbital Septum is where the fat pads of the eyeballs are located

Eyelashes hairs: lies at the junction of the eyelids skin and the eyeball there considered to be the cosmetic part of the eye. Eyelashes purpose is to prevent foreign substance from entering the eye by acting as enhanced touch receptors.

Dark Circles: Dark circles gives the appearance of sunken eyes that are tired and drawn. Pigmentation(Eumelanin) is concentrated around the upper or lower eyelid. The cause of concentrated eyelid pigmentation include

  • Deep set eyes
  • melanin production
  • hemosiderin deposition
  • increased blood flow
  • edema (eye puffiness)

The architecture of the eye is a common cause of dark circles causes of eyelid irritation possibly resulting in concentrated pigmentation around the eyes.
